What do we mean by rapport?

People like people who are like themselves or who behave like them. Sensing that someone else is like you is done at the conscious and subconscious (or unconscious) levels. Two people who sense that each is like the other at an unconscious level are said to be ‘in rapport’.

Rapport is an essential component of any good-quality relationship. Therefore, if you want to build up or improve the quality of a relationship, you need to take some time to actively listen to the other person. If you observe any professional who is known for their strong relationships with clients, you will notice that they spend a large part of the conversation actively listening to the client.

Many textbooks and training workshops will teach you a technique called mirroring. This is where you copy the other person’s body language, to try and build rapport. While this sounds fine in theory, in practice it never works. In fact, mirroring naturally happens when you have generated rapport, rather than rapport being generated because you have copied someone’s gestures.
